P3D v4 – what is the TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP tweak and what does it do? (with comparison screenshots)

as soon as P3D v4 was released, the TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP tweak emerged in the community, no one really knew what it did, apart from it improved aspects of the ground textures

over on the avsim forums ‘poppet’ gave some clarification as to what it does in the sim…

“TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP   Is short for “texture size exponent”    This is the resolution of the per-tile texture.   By default this was 8 with previous versions of Prepar3D,   8 being each terrain tile at 256×256 texture. (2^8 = 256)

TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=9     This will use 512 sized textures and will look like you have double your LOD radius,  You will need at least 6 gig of video ram to use this

TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=10    This will use 1024 sized textures,   You will need at least 8 gig of video ram to use this

Both settings will increase loading times”

so we ran some test to see if its effect on the sim is really that substantial, using ORBX global, OPENLC NA, and the ORBX Southern California region in the a2a Cessna 172

TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=8 (default)

TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=9

TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=10

close comparison

these are the same images but in the order of TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=8 to TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=10

conclusion

as you can see, there is not much of a difference in texture quality at close range (using the mesh resolution at 2m) but textures do seem a little sharper in the distance, especially with using TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=10 in comparison with using the default 8.

with using TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=10 rather than the default, our vram usage jumped up from 3.5GB to 4GB, which shows that larger textures are indeed being loaded in, but the vram remains at a level which most graphic cards can accommodate

we will release an updated post in the future when we learn more about this tweak and the community comes to better understand v4 and its new settings

Where under the p3d.cfg file should this line be added?
